Tornado Preparedness
If you live in certain areas, Tornado Preparedness is essential
Tornados hit quickly and without warning. A standard summer night thunderstorm can instant develop into a devastating series of tornados. It is essential that every family develop a Tornado Preparedness plan, so if disaster does strike, you are prepared to deal with it safely. Every family should develop a home tornado plan. You should pick a place to go gather in the event of a tornado warning. The ideal location is a basement, however if there is no basement the best alternative is a center hallway, bathroom, or closet on the lowest floor. It is essential that you stay away from windows, as broken glass and high-speed exterior debris are the cause of many tornado related injuries. Beyond finding a safe spot in your home, you should prepare a disaster kit. A well planned disaster kit should include the following: A first aid kit and essential medications, canned food and can opener, at least three gallons of water per person, protective clothing, bedding, or sleeping bags, battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries, special items for infant, elderly, or disabled family members, and written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas, and water if authorities advise you to do so. To simplify your life, the American Red Cross has developed a series of Emergency Preparation kits designed specifically for the disasters that each area of the country is likely to face.
