Hurricane Preparedness
Hurricane Preparedness is essential in many parts of the country
Seemingly every year several parts of the country are hit with devastating hurricanes. And while the hurricane itself is a scary experience, many hurricane survivors will tell you that it is nothing compared to the trauma and chaos that it leaves in its wake. It is not uncommon for areas hit by hurricanes to be without electricity and running water for weeks at a time. As a hurricane approaches stores see a run on supplies such as water and batteries, meaning that many people are not able to ensure an adequate stock of basic supplies. Thus, it is essential that every home be equipped with a disaster kit. A well planned disaster kit should include the following: A first aid kit and essential medications, canned food and can opener, at least three gallons of water per person, protective clothing, bedding, or sleeping bags, battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries, special items for infant, elderly, or disabled family members, and written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas, and water if authorities advise you to do so. Fortunately the American Red Cross has put the expertise that they have gained from helping hurricane victims over the last 130 years to work by designing a series of Hurricane Preparedness Kits. The proceeds from the sale of these kits goes towards helping the Red Cross work. Click below for more information on Hurricane Preparedness directly from the Red Cross.
